Meet Mum and Dad. Mum is a teacher and Dad works in a post office. Their jobs mean that they have lower energy requirements than their teenage son Max, who is very active. However, like teenagers, they do need a well balanced diet to provide all the nutrients necessary for the maintenance and repair of body tissues. Adult women of child-bearing age, like Mum, have higher iron requirements and should eat plenty of iron rich foods to prevent anaemia. Women are also more at risk of developing osteoporosis in later life, and so need a good supply of calcium. Both adult men and women should take particular care not to eat too many high fat foods. It is also important for them to engage in regular physical activity throughout their lives. A good supply of non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) is also important to maintain a healthy digestive system.
