What is Food4Life?

Food 4 Life is an interactive, internet-based resource designed to support the teaching of nutrition and food safety elements of the Northern Ireland Home Economics Curriculum.

What does it contain?

The site contains nutritional information applicable to the entire population (e.g. primary food groups, sources of nutrients, general dietary advice), in addition to specific information and advice relating to the following key stages in the life cycle:

In addition, the site includes information on food safety, practical food preparation, and a range of recipe ideas which combine traditional cooking methods with new world and ethnic cuisine. For more information and teachers guidance go to the teachers area.

How is it structured?

The objective of this website is to communicate important information in a fun and interactive way. Each key stage in the life cycle contains three basic activities:

  1. A question and answer activity covering a broad range of issues relevant to that particular key stage.
  2. A more in-depth, practical activity relevant to that particular key stage.
  3. A free-response worksheet activity linked to a practical cookery class.

The activities vary in their level of difficulty and in the level of input required by the pupil.

The website has been designed so that activities may be used together, or in isolation, depending on the ability of the pupils, and on the teaching time available. It is envisaged that elements will be suitable for both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 pupils.

LMC Education Service

This resource has been produced by the LMC Education Service in collaboration with Northern Ireland Home Economics Teachers. LMC Education Service was established to provide professionals and consumers with accurate information on the quality and safety of Northern Ireland Farm Quality Assured Beef and Lamb, and to advise them on its role as part of a healthy balanced diet.
